The Challenge

Our client is a highly successful European fund targeting high growth investments in a variety of sectors, often with a technology angle. We have supported this client both through the provision of strategy consulting services to its portfolio companies and the provision of advice and commercial due diligence on potential acquisitions.

Our client was considering investing in a leading provider of strategic energy management, energy procurement and risk management services to a wide range of clients throughout Europe including both SMEs and blue-chip major energy users. The business was being divested from a larger corporate parent in a highly competitive sale process.

The Approach

We worked closely with our client over three phases:

  • Phase 1 provided initial market research to support a swift ‘go / no-go’ decision based on the core investment hypotheses.
  • Phase 2 delved into more detail, covering the addressable market, the sustainability of the company’s margins and the achievability of its business plan.
  • Phase 3 provided final layers of detail specific to additional data and access granted later in the deal process.

During all three of these phases the CIL team worked very closely with the client and the management team. The fine detail of our various analyses was shared and debated with the investment team in regular conference calls and meetings. Our approach was strongly collaborative and the evidence behind our conclusions was widely understood and tested prior to completion.

The Result

Our client successfully acquired the target business and our strategic recommendations are being put in place. CIL has also developed a good ongoing relationship with the target company management team.
